Famous Americans and American Symbols

Over the past two weeks we have been learning about Famous Americans! We have learned about George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, and Helen Keller. We have also talked about American symbols! We've talked about the flag, the bald eagle, the Liberty Bell, Mount Rushmore, and apple pie!

Look what we have learned!

Famous Americans 

George Washington!
He was our first president.

       

   

Abraham Lincoln! 

He was born in a log cabin! He was our 16th president. He is on the penny and on Mount Rushmore!

We learned about Thomas Edison!

He invented lightbulbs!

* We were so busy creating our own bright idea that I missed taking pictures! ;) 

We learned about Helen Keller! 

She is a remarkable person. She was blind and deaf, yet she still went to school (and graduated)! We learned about braille, and we wrote our own name in braille. We also had fun walking to the lunchroom "blind". 

American Symbols

The American Flag

The American flag has changed over the years. The stars have been different, but the stripes have remained the same. There are 13 stripes, which represent the first 13 colonies. There are 50 stars, which represent each state. 

The Bald Eagle 

The Bald Eagle is another one of our American symbols. A bald eagle's nest can weigh as much as 6 adult human beings!! We visited http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles where we were able to watch a bald eagle in it's own habitat. If you have a minute, you should check it out! It's neat.

 
The Liberty Bell
The Liberty Bell is located in Philadelphia, PA.  It is an iconic symbol of American independence. The crack on the bell is believed to have happened on Washington's Birthday in 1846. That was the last time the bell was rung.

Mount Rushmore
Mount Rushmore is dedicated to American history. It has four presidents carved on its side: Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. It took 14 years for it to be completed.

*Note: Yes, we used coins for the presidents. We did tell the children that the Roosevelt on the dime is a different Roosevelt from the one on Mount Rushmore. :) We had fun making our own Mount Rushmore!

And APPLE PIE!
Today we made apple pie! We also dressed up as our favorite Dr. Seuss character to celebrate National Read Across America Day, aka Dr. Seuss Day (March 2, 2015).

It's "as American as apple pie!"

We dressed up in our best Dr. Seuss outfits - even our school pig joined the fun!
