We are out of this world!

This past week we learned about space! We talked about the sun, the moon, the Earth, and the planets!

The Sun

The sun is a star! It is like other stars you see at night. It looks so big because it is the closest star to Earth. The sun is a giant ball of very hot gas! The Earth and other planets travel around the sun. More than one million Earths could fit inside the sun. All living things need the sun.

We used the sun to talk about sounds of "er, ar, ur, or, and ir".

The Moon

The moon is a satellite. Satellites travel around planets. The moon circles our planet, the Earth. It takes about 27 days for the moon to go around the Earth one time. The moon is covered with deep holes called craters. Astronauts have traveled to the moon. An astronaut is someone who travels in space.

The Earth (and Earth Day)

You have a home in this vast place [the solar system]. That home is the Earth. The Earth is special. It is the only spot in space known to have life.

What will you do to help the Earth?

"I can help the Earth by cleaning up litter."

 "I can recycle."

"I can help the Earth by picking up stuff."

"I won't litter."

The Planets

Planets are round like balls. They travel through space at amazing speeds. All of the planets orbit around the sun. The four planets closest to the sun are called the inner planets. The other four are called the outer planets. The planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

Over the past few weeks we have also been talking about 3D shapes. This week we collected items for our 3D shapes museum! Check it out!

We had a blast learning about our solar system and our home, the Earth.

Stay tuned!
Until next time.
